For his sixteenth birthday, all Jon wanted were the keys to the family car. Instead, he got a lousy magic ring…
Although sixteen-year-old Jon Hansen is an artistic prodigy, he yearns to fit in. When he discovers a secret magical heritage, however, his regular life turns upside down. After an evil wizard kidnaps his father to another dimension, Jon vows to rescue him... if can figure out how to wield the magical artifacts his father left behind.
Can Jon outwit the most evil wizard the magical world has ever known? Or will he become the next wizard in Efysian's gruesome collection?
The Last Great Wizard of Yden is the first book of the series. Though there are, obviously, other books in this series, this one has a clear ending with conflicts resolved.
Jon is a typical high-school artist. Or so he thinks. When his father vanishes during a struggle with an unknown, creepy, yellow-eyed man, the police are understandably skeptical of Jon’s story. Unfortunately, news spreads and rumors fly.
I really liked the relationship that Jon had with his little sister, Sela. Their obvious affection and the way they stuck together was sweet, as was the way he stayed with her until she fell asleep so she wouldn’t have nightmares.
I also loved Chaz, Jon’s uncle, who is a judge with the JAGs. Chaz installs a punching bag for Jon and teaches him to fight. He also makes Jon work out. One of my favorite lines in the story was when they are talking about the “guns” Chaz has. He tells Jon that he is starting to to develop guns, too, to which Jon replies that if he has guns, they are popguns.
An unlikely group of teenagers end up taking a journey to the world of Yden where they face the powerful wolf-clan wizard, imps, cygards, a warload, water nymphs (they were mean!) and other magical creatures.
Suzanne Rogers created a fun magical world in this series.
