Young Stella Bradford is determined to win the love of James Collingwood, her English professor at the university where Stella is studying to be an architect. But the object of Stella’s affection seems to hide a dark secret from his past, and even if Stella could capture his attention, she is certain her father would not approve of the match. But neither James, nor Stella has an inkling that his secret is woven into her own past in a way that will ultimately bring blessing to them both.
What a lovely story! Deborah Raney conveyed so much in this novella.
James was such a perfect hero. Though he had made a terrible mistake when he was younger, he was given a second chance by the very man he had wronged. And then through a miracle he was given yet another chance to change his life. His devotion to the Lord was so sweet and tender. Throughout the story he displayed noble character and a strength to do what is right no matter how difficult.
Stella was fun because she was at least a little tempestuous and strong-willed. But at the same time, she obeyed her father, even when everything in her struggled to rebel against his decree.
I especially liked the ending and the unexpected twist. This story is just perfect for a December read and a reminder of the huge impact a small act of kindness can have on others.
Here is the first line of the story:
Dakota Territory, 1864
It was almost closing time, and in all of his seventeen years, James Collingwood could not remember being so bone-weary as he felt tonight.
