While I often equate the Amish with a close-knit community and families that stand up for one another, I don’t believe I have read another Amish book that highlights this as much or as well as The Wedding Quilt Bride. Author Marta Perry has done such a beautiful job of showing how families can work together to support and care for one another in this lovely book.

I was so touched by the kind way Daniel treated Lige, Rebecca’s son. (His full name is Elijah, so I imagine the nickname is pronounced like that.) While he was amazing with children in general, the scene when they first met and he worked so hard, yet so naturally, to draw a smile from the young boy also brought a smile to my face. His strong sense of responsibility and protectiveness towards those he loves made him quite endearing.

Rebecca had such a hard time allowing herself to rely on others or to allow them to help after the pain she endured in her marriage, including the way her in-laws responded to her needs. The response of her own family and the community to her was so beautiful. I loved seeing them help her set up her shop. And then on the day the quilt shop opened, not only showing up but buying things they didn’t necessarily need.

This story stands on its own, and yet had hints of a new story to come. I do hope that the next book will be about Daniel’s little brother. I would love to know how his story ends.

About Marta Perry

Marta Perry realized she wanted to be a writer at age eight, when she read her first Nancy Drew novel. Most girls reached the end of that book wanting to be Nancy. Marta wanted to be the person who created the story.

The dream lay hidden for years while she pursued other career goals, but eventually it re-surfaced, and she began to write, beginning with short children’s stories for Sunday school take-home papers. After seeing hundreds of her short stories published in a variety of magazines, Marta finally started work on the novel she’d always wanted to write. Fifty-some published novels later, she still feels the same excitement when she begins a new book.

A lifetime spent in rural Pennsylvania and her own Pennsylvania Dutch roots led Marta to the books she writes now about the Amish. The Pleasant Valley Amish series from Berkley Books are longer, more complex emotional stories with Amish main characters, while the Amish Suspense series from HQN Books are more adventure-filled books set in Pennsylvania Amish country. She also continues to write for Love Inspired Books.

Marta lives with her husband in a century-old farmhouse in the Pennsylvania countryside, but spends winters at their vacation home in South Carolina. When she’s not writing, she’s active in the life of her church and enjoys traveling and spending time with her three children and six beautiful grandchildren.
