Character Spotlight: John Mitchell

by Amanda Mason

I am excited and honored to introduce you to John Mitchell, lead character in the novel “A Mountain Worth Moving” which is available exclusively on Amazon. John is the protagonist in this story of hope and redemption.

At thirty years old, John finds himself with a tremendous amount of pressure on his shoulders. After having a successful career and life in the city, guilt has driven John home to take care of his family and the family’s sprawling cattle ranch. John’s youngest brother, Ben, was injured in a hunting accident several years ago and due to circumstances surrounding the accident, John feels responsible for his brother’s injuries. Ben’s accident coupled with the death of John’s beloved father has left the family hurting and wounded.

After the death of his father, John feels that he must now shoulder the load, of not only providing for his family, but also protecting them from anymore heartache. He believes that one more devastating blow could finally rip his family apart and vows to not allow that to happen. John is a strong, quiet individual. He tries to keep his family together, no matter how he is affected personally. He has put his own life on hold and dedicated himself to his family because he feels that is the very least he owes them since he believes his actions set them on this course. John is fiercely loyal, protective and encompasses a strong sense of duty to his family.

When John encounters Ben’s new therapist, Jill Morgan, he fights the attraction he feels for her. He internally justifies his rude behavior toward her, by claiming he is protecting his family. John fears the hope that Jill offers to his family. Hope can be a scary proposition to someone who has experienced crushing pain because it means taking a risk and putting faith in someone or something else. At this point in his life, John is afraid to hope, because he is afraid of more pain and disappointment; John sees control as his only option to avoid pain. Jill’s own bold witness of her faith causes John to examine his own spirituality. While John is a believer in God, he has yet to grasp the fullness of God’s love and forgiveness. Throughout the story, God is continually placing people in John’s life and placing John in situations that will show John the fullness of God’s redemption. And while John‘s extremely guarded about his family and his heart, when he loves, he loves deeply as we see when he finally allows his attraction to Jill to develop.

John is a great representation of how life can bring us to our knees but how if we allow ourselves not only to believe the promises of God, but also that He can turn ashes into beauty, even our pain can be part of a glorious life.

Duty caused him to return. Guilt kept him there. When his youngest brother, Ben, suffers a horrific injury quickly followed by the death of his father, John Mitchell moves home to assume the role as patriarch of the Triple M Ranch. Four hard years have passed since those tragic events and his family seems more fractured than ever. With one brother permanently disabled, another brother bent on causing even more heartache for the family and one of the largest ranches in Northern Montana to run, John has become an expert at pushing emotions to the side and pushing through the misery. Carrying a burden of guilt over his own role in his family's situation, John vows to protect his family and his ranch by whatever means necessary.

After experiencing her own heartaches, Jill Morgan has dedicated her professional life to providing therapy to traumatic brain injury patients. When she initially meets the Mitchell family, she can't shake the feeling that God wants her to help them. She begins to wage a battle to admit Ben to the elite therapy program at the hospital where she works. Expecting his family to be thrilled at the prospects of Ben being awarded one of the coveted spots in the program, she is shocked when she is confronted by a gruff and protective John Mitchell.

Determined to prove to the tall, taciturn, cowboy that he is completely wrong about her and her therapy techniques, Jill throws herself completely into Ben's rehabilitation. Only when Ben doesn't respond the way she had thought he would, and she gets to know the cowboy behind the rough exterior, Jill begins to think that maybe she was to help both brothers overcome injuries. John hasn't allowed himself to feel anything but guilt for four years. He doesn't think he deserves happiness, but after getting to know Jill, he knows he can no longer deny the feelings he has for her. Convinced that if Jill knew the truth behind his role in his families tragedies, she would hate him, John must decided whether or not to risk his heart for a fleeting moment of happiness. And when heartache threatens to strike the Mitchell family again and John must decide if there is room in his life for both Jill and his responsibilities to his brothers and mother. He must decide if the burden he carries from the last four years is a mountain worth moving.
