And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.

What God Purposes, He Will Do
By Regina Scott
I was raised on the edges of Catholicism, with an agnostic father and a mother who did her best to expose my brother and me to the idea of a loving God. But I didn’t really find faith until I walked down to an altar at a Nazarene Church as an adult. New to my salvation, I grew closer and closer to the Lord, day by day. I brought all my concerns to Him. Then, one day, He asked something of me. Give up my day job and focus on writing.
You’d think I would be overjoyed. Ever since I’d understood as a child that those wonderful books I was reading were written by someone, I’d wanted to be that person. But I had become convinced over the years that I would never make enough income from my writing to support myself, let alone contribute to our family. I had served as a nanny, preschool teacher, and director of an afterschool care program before going back to college to earn a degree in scientific and technical communication, all as a way to supplement what I had come to term my writing habit. I had worked my way up from technical writer to researcher with a national laboratory. I had a lucrative salary, generous amounts of sick time, six weeks of paid vacation, medical and dental insurance, and a 401K.
So, I am ashamed to say, I argued with Him. I had bills to pay. My husband owned his own business; we relied on the insurance from my work for our two young sons. I was respected in my field. I couldn’t possibly leave all that behind for something as nebulous as royalty statements that came twice a year, if they came at all.
God didn’t give up on me. Isn’t it wonderful? No matter how we resist, how far we run from His will for us, He’s always ready to accept us back. He kept laying His plan before me, hand firm on my back, until I could no longer resist His urging.
With His guidance, I found a way to freelance as a researcher and technical writer while still writing my clean historical romances and releasing more books a year. We found a company that would insure an independent contractor like me. I stepped out in faith, still fearful that I would not be able to pay the bills.
That was 18 years ago, and every bill has been paid.
Sometimes I wasn’t sure when or how until it happened. But He has never let me down.
He brought me a contract with first one and then another inspirational romance publisher so my work would always give Him glory. He showed me how to use my skills as a technical writer to try self-publishing and opened doors that led more readers to my books. When publishing contracts were scarce from time to time, He brought technical work to my door to supplement our income. I have never had to advertise, have completed perhaps three proposals in all that time and those on request. He sends what we need, when we need it.
When I worked for the national laboratory, I was on salary. I knew exactly how much money would be deposited in my account and exactly what day it would arrive. It was easy to believe that that money came solely through my efforts rather than as a gift from God. When you don’t know what money is coming and which month, as if often the case with royalty payments and freelance invoices, you suddenly realize exactly Who brings that money to your door.
Do I still struggle? Sometimes. But God has proven Himself faithful. What He purposes, He will do. What purpose is He working out in your life?
