Welcome to Songs of Salvation! Each Sunday I will feature a Christian author sharing a "Song of Salvation" to uplift and encourage believers and glorify God.
And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. Revelation 12:11 NLT
Authors, find out how to share your Song of Salvation here.
I grew up in a loving family. We helped our neighbors, paid our taxes, worked hard and stayed out of trouble, but we didn’t know Jesus. We celebrated Christmas, but the focus of the holiday was on gift giving, not Christ’s birth. My mom would tell me there was a heaven and that good people went there. That should have been comforting. Right? But even as a child, I knew I wasn’t good all the time. Would I make it into heaven?
Death is a scary concept for a kid. I thought it unfair that you lived life, loved your family, and then…nothing. Heaven maybe, if the scale of good tipped my way? In life it seemed like some people were lucky and others were not so lucky. And who decided who received the luck?
I had questions, but not many answers. Not until my mom was invited to Bible Study Fellowship. My mom thought she was a Christian, but it wasn’t until she opened a Bible and read about Jesus’ death on a cross that her eyes were opened to God. One of the best things my mom did as a new believer, was to take my sister and me to church. She blazed the trail without my dad’s help at first. I’m so thankful she overcame obstacles (that’s for another post) and attended church.
During Sunday School, I learned about Jesus’ dying for all the bad stuff I did. I realized I had been right all along. I couldn’t be good enough to go to heaven on my own. I was a pretty good kid, but everyone makes mistakes, sometimes on purpose. I didn’t need to fear death. My bad stuff (sin) was forgiven because of Jesus’ death on the cross, the shedding of His blood, and His rising from the dead. I would be in heaven for ever and ever with my new friend Jesus.
And best of all, there was a reason to life. God created the world and everything in it, including me! He was in control and I could pray to Him when my life was going well and when it wasn’t. I didn’t need luck. I had a relationship with Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
I was in the third grade when my fear of death was abolished. Many years have past and my relationship with God, through Jesus work on the cross, has grown abundantly. I’m still not perfect, but I’m forgiven by Jesus’ sacrifice. I don’t have religion. I have a relationship with an amazing God.
My relationship with Jesus has brought me through an ectopic pregnancy, the loss of a parent, and a battle with breast cancer. As the hymn says, because Jesus lives, I can face tomorrow. What a blessing to have Jesus’ love and support in my life.
Who would have thought that a young girl who didn’t know Jesus would grow up, marry an ordained minister, teach chapel, and write Biblical fiction to bring little known Bible stories to light.
