Today I have author Carol James joining me to talk about her Christmas Novella, The Unexpected Christmas Gift which releases today.
Carol, thank you so much for joining me!
What is your favorite genre to write, and why?
My favorite genre to write is romance. I absolutely love happy endings, and romance almost always guarantees that outcome. When I first started writing, I rebelled against the idea of being a romance writer because there were so many negative connotations associated with the genre. But as I struggled to accept what I knew I was being called to do, God reminded me that the greatest story of all time was a romance. A sacred romance. A loving God pursuing the hearts of mankind.
Yay! I have to admit that I love romance stories, especially when they include that greatest romance of all!
What are you working on now?
I just completed a novel that addresses a woman’s struggle to break free of childhood abuse and learn to trust and love again. The working title is No Longer a Captive.
What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
It sounds really basic, but my favorite thing about writing is crafting stories. When I plan a novel, I know maybe four different points along the plot-line. The rest I fill in as I go along. I love placing my characters in messy situations and watching them fight to get free. I know the final outcome will be positive, but sometimes the choices my characters make along the way surprise me.
What themes connect all the stories you’ve written or want to write?
When I began writing, I didn’t plan to have a recurring theme in my novels, but one idea kept nosing it’s way into my work. Forgiveness. Oftentimes my characters must learn to give and accept forgiveness. In Season of Hope (releasing in 2020), the heroine, Hope, must learn not only to forgive others, but to forgive herself.
What would be the biggest compliment a reader could offer about one of your stories?
One of the most humbling moments I have experienced as a writer was after my first novel, Rescuing Faith, was released. It’s the story about a woman who’s husband has been unfaithful to her and how she moves past his infidelity and rejection. Not long after the novel was released, a gentleman at church came up to me and gave me a big hug. He said the book addressed exactly what his daughter was currently living through and that reading it had really ministered to and encouraged her. That was the biggest compliment anyone could offer me, because ministry is my whole purpose for writing.
The second biggest compliment a reader can offer is to write and post a positive review. Life is busy, and when someone takes the time to do so, I don’t take it lightly.
Wow! I love that story and love that you have such a heart for the Lord.
What is one thing that would probably surprise your readers to know about you?
I am a soccer fan extraordinaire. I love American MLS and English Premier League soccer and keep my DVR busy recording games. I would love to have the opportunity to see one of my favorite English teams play in person.
What is your favorite Bible verse?
This is like asking a mother to choose her favorite child. I can’t choose a favorite. Different verses have ministered to me at different times in my life. But the verses God brought to me when my life was undergoing a major change and He was leading me to begin writing were Isaiah 43: 18-19.
“Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.”
These verses are the backbone of my writing ministry.
That probably wasn’t a fair question. I have lots of problems picking favorites myself!
You just releasedThe Unexpected Christmas Gift .What prompted you to choose the location you did?
My new Christmas novella, The Unexpected Christmas Gift, is set in and around Dusseldorf, Germany. Several years ago, my husband and I took a business trip to Dusseldorf to attend a trade show. We visited some of the same places Eli and Holly visit in the novella. And the setting was almost magic. The majestic cathedral in Cologne and the enchanting Christmas markets provided a backdrop for a story I knew I would one day write. And yes, we even experienced the “pushers.” (You’ll have to read the novella to find out exactly what that is.)
Will you tell us about the main characters?
Eli is a fun-loving entrepreneur. His final year of college, a family tragedy pulled him off the road he was traveling and placed him on another career path. He is ethical…almost to a fault.
Holly is all about business. She is on a mission to help save her failing company.
When Eli and Holly meet, ethics and love collide. And which will prevail?
Thank you, Carol for joining me. This sounds like a great story and I’m looking forward to reading it.
